Agnes was the first doll in Our Doll collection!
She is life size – being 36 inches/92 cms tall and definitely a large doll to carry as can be seen in the picture below where we see Agnes, my mother, who is about 10yrs old at the time and is carrying her very carefully!
Agnes originally belonged to my dear grandmother, Livia, who is shown here at about age 10.
Livia was given this beautiful doll by her grandmother, Agnes and she has always been affectionately known as “Agnes Baba”.
As my Aunt Sari recalls,
“I imagine Agnes Menasagi ordered her from Vienna to Transylvania. Mother was 10 and very thrilled. She played with her very carefully! She had dresses made of homespun cotton”.
If anyone is familiar with antique dolls and recognizes who the manufacturer of this doll might be, I would be thrilled to hear from you!
The only visible markings on Agnes are on the back of her head where one can see 1906.
This would most likely have been the year she was made and as my grandmother was born in 1896, this would make the most sense.
Agnes has travelled the world far and wide over the years – from the little town of Szokefalva, Transylvania to Canada!
She was restored to her present excellent condition in the early 1990’s. In the pictures on this site she wears two lovely size 3 outfits!
It is amazing to think that Agnes Baba is now almost 106 years old. A true family treasure!
